Mr Democracy

A written constitution for the UK (made in China)

  • Welcome to Mr Democracy, the story of a British artist who set off to get a written constitution for the UK made.
Understanding the changing balance of power in the world, and with a nod to Britain’s ‘democratic’ ventures across the world, he chose to get it written in China, and ship it back to the UK.

Exhibition

Mr Democracy

an international solo project by Oliver Walker.

The project was exhibited at The Royal Standard, an artist run space in Liverpool, from 19th September – 30th November 2008.

A container was hired for the project, and the vinyl lettering installed on the rear side.

Vinyl lettering (colour matched to the container) of the same size was installed on the stairwell inside the building, leading directly to the video installation on the first floor.

At 10 weeks, the exhibition was relatively long. For the first 4 weeks, the container housed a flat screen monitor displaying a live google map showing the position of the ship carrying the container with the 1000 dolls inside. When the dolls arrived (after their short stay hosted by HMCE in Felixstowe), they were installed in this container.
